How is America like Austria in the 1930s?

What strikes me about Werthmann’s account is how quickly a country can be transformed into a dictatorship when people pin their hopes on government interventions in the economy, business and private life, and how the interventions have comprehensively negative effects.

Kitty Werthmann survived Hitler.

“What I am about to tell you is something you’ve probably never heard or read in history books,” she likes to tell audiences.

“I am a witness to history.

“I cannot tell you that Hitler took Austria by tanks and guns; it would distort history.

“We voted him in.”
